Masquing was a popular form of royal entertainment under the Tudors and early Stuart monarchs. Originating in Italy, from relatively simple beginnings the masque expanded into an elaborate show encompassing drama, music, dance, spectacle and special effects, employing the leading writers, painters and composers of the time.
When Covid struck, in 2020, masks suddenly became a feature of everyday life. Anyone not wishing to either catch, or pass on, the virus wore a mask, and everyday life was suddenly restricted. For the more fortunate these restrictions, irksome in themselves, could at least be turned to creative use, and many of the poems in this collection were written at that time.
